In 2015 Tom O’Morchoe, Kiltra House, Wellington Bridge, Co Wexford was the Branch’s of the Hall of Fame 2015 Awards worthy nominee. Tom took over the running of the Kiltra flock in 1983. This flock was established in 1917 by Tom’s Grandfather and it is now enjoying its fourth generation of Suffolk Breeding. Despite the many changes to farming over the years the one constant at Kiltra Flock has been the policy to breed strong rams for commercial use with particular emphasis on production of shearling rams lambed in March each year. Over the years well know breeders started their flocks with Kiltra stock. Including the late Bob Morris in 1936; the late Dick Moore in 1958 and Tom Bailey in 1989. Prior to 1980’s the flock improvement was mainly dependent on on leasing of imported rams through the Department of Agriculture. In the mid 1980 breeders could select and purchase their own imported rams. From that point on Tom made several trips to Kelso and Edinburgh to ram sales. Not only did this led to improved flock performance but to many happy memories of lasting friendships and these trips became the highlight of the breeding year. Tom served the South of Ireland Brach of the Suffolk Sheep Society in many capacities including Chairman, Council Representative and PRO when he produced the first edition of the Irish Suffolk News.
