Saturday 6th August was expected to be one of the hottest days of year and following a very bad summer it was not the  forecast that would induce farmers to leave their farms and rush off to buy a ram for the mating season. However, we were pleasantly delighted to have a 66% clearance and an average price of €970gns at South of Ireland Branch Suffolk Premier Sale.  This Sale was basically a Breeders Sale with the majority of the rams sold going to breeders.  Two ram lambs were sold to Northern Ireland Breeders.  The overall standard of sheep on offer was very high again this year and the important message was that top quality sheep will make premium price.

Then female section of the show was quieter than in previous years; it was dominated by Philip Lynch of the “Glyde Flock” with his Female Champion; a ewe lamb, daughter of Glyde Goldbar, she was sold for € 880gns to Augustus Doyle from Avoca. Co. Wicklow.  Gerry Killilea’s Reserve Champion ewe lamb sold to Shaun & Seamus Gahan from St. Mullins Co Carlow for €700gns. Matt Pearse from the “Priorview Flock” sold two ewe lambs for €650 and €580gns respectively. Eric Campbell realised €600gns for his ewe lamb.

Champion of the Show went to Donegal again this year. Andrew Wilson’s January born Ram Lamb sired by Birness Murray out of a Ewe by Strathisla Speed captured the Supreme Champion of the Show. He was sold for €1,500gns to Mark Grealy from Middle Third Oranmore. This lamb was also first in the Open Ram Lamb Class  Andrew enjoyed great success in the sales ring for his other two very stylish lambs selling for €2,650gns and €1,300gns respectively.   Judge Martin Butler of the “Castlewood Flock” was the able judge for the day.  Martin lined up PJ Howards February born ram lamb as Reserve Champion of the Show and winner of the Novice Class, sired by Garryhinch Impact out of a ewe sired by Kells Liam Og. This ram was purchased by Denis Taylor a Derry Breeder for €3,100gns.

O & G Deane’s Prize winning Shearling Ram realised €1,000gns

A number of breeders realised high prices for their lambs including Susan O’Keeffe €2540gns sold to Padraic Niland from Ardrahan Co. Galway; Susan also secured €1,900gns; €1050gns; €1,000gns; €720gns; €700gns; twice and€600gns for her pen of outstanding lambs.

Shaun & Seamus Gahan from St. Mullins, Co. Carlow: “Barrowlands Flock” sold for €2,200gns; purchased by Edward Jeffery Ladysbridge Co. Cork.

Seamus Browne from Letterkenny “Errigal Flock” sold for €1,600gnd to Richard Moore Thomastown Co. Kilkenny.

John Doherty from Malin Head Donegal sold two lambs for €2,100 each one to Sean Halloran, breeder from Roscahill Co. Galway and one to John P. Screene & Sons Menlough Co. Galway. John also sold the remainder of his pen for €1,020gns; €1,000 and €600gns.

Richard Wilson, brother of Andrew sold for €1,300gns. Philip Lynch Ram Lamb €900gns.
